Statistics of sports accidents show: almost one third of all annual sports accidents in Austria happen at down-hill skiing and snowboarding. More than 58.000 accidents happen at Alpine winter-sports alone.
Faster skis, Carving skis, hard-packed slopes (especially with artificial snow), higher speed, increased capacities of lifts leading to more skiers and snowboarders on the slopes - and let’s not forget - overestimation of one’s capability, all these are factors which increase the risk of accidents in alpine wintersports.
A constantly rising number of trend-sport freaks in Parks & Pipes and Kite Areas, as well as those skiers and snowboarders who ski off-piste in deep powder, are all part of the high-risk group of potential accidents.
This trend requests the best possible gear, not only when it comes to skis but also helmets and protectors.
The attitude towards safety of winter-sports enthusiasts has changed – the helmet is already established. The number of skiers not wearing a helmet is reduced every year. To wear a back-protector is IN and a rising tendency and increased awareness of safety of the consumers is obvious.

First and foremost a protector has to protect against the enormous energy of impact during a crash and it has to reduce it to a minimum. Not everything calling itself protector provides sufficient protection. The shock test: at this test a weight of 5 kg falls onto the protectors from 1 metre above. The residual energy is measured, meaning the energy still hitting the body in spite of the protector and which can lead to severe injury if the person does not wear a protector. The smaller this value is, the better the protector. All KOMPERDELL protectors show values well below these legal values.
